Brand New on the Nationals' Slight Rebranding

There is a New “W” in Town”

I like the change to script for the wording but do think it looks a bit generic baseball. Also the “O” looks too much like the Orioles’ “O”.

What's in (Or Out) of a Name

In case you ever wondered why you’re cheering for a group of young bears, Northern statesmen, or tiny birds, here’s a Venn diagram of baseball team names and their etymology.

[I really can’t summarize this link better than Ainsley Drew has at kottke.org, so I’m just quoting her and taking the opportunity to mention that I’ve added a custom field to Movable Type for link attribution. It’s not visible in the RSS feed but you can see a “via” link in the footer of relevant posts.

Update: after some quick research, I’ve added a link item to my Atom feed with rel="via". I don’t know how newsreader clients will respond, but it’s in there.]

A Rooting Interest in the Bottom Line

A Rooting Interest in the Bottom Line

The Nationals are seeing a great surge in attendance from visiting fans rooting against them. It’s easy to get to DC from Philly, New York, or Boston, and it’s cheaper to get good seats here.

John Rawls on Baseball

John Rawls and Harry Kalven: Six Reasons Why Baseball Is the Best of All Games. I’ve been thinking as I’ve watched some televised baseball recently about number five, the remarkable effect of concentrating the excitement of plays at different points of the field at the same time. Will the runner cross the plate before the fielder gets to the ball and throws it to home plate, and so on. TV doesn’t do this very well. The camera often has to focus either on the runner or the fielder.

D.C.'s Diamond In the Rough

D.C.’s Diamond In the Rough

How the Nationals’ stadium could end up being a beauty or a beast, depending on how much the team decides to skimp on the details.

Rendering of the Nationals’ stadium (man, what a clumsy name! Who else can’t wait until it has a corporate sponsor?).

D.C. Seeks 'Signature' Ballpark

D.C. Seeks ‘Signature’ Ballpark

This frightens me. Classic is almost always better than contemporary. If the new stadium winds up as the William & Mary New Campus of ballparks I’m going to be mad.

Dictionary.com: Grays

It’s been suggested that the ex-Expos be renamed the Grays after the old Washington Negro League team (though I prefer “The Washington Monuments”). What is a gray?

The SI unit for the energy absorbed from ionizing radiation, equal to one joule per kilogram.

Go Grays!
