Twin Peaks on iTunes

Twin Peaks is now for sale on iTunes, in HD. I’m not quite sure what “HD” means in this context, since it aired long before HDTV existed. The important thing is that the proper US pilot is for sale. The version of the pilot on many VHS and DVD copies contains footage from later episodes, which is very confusing.

If you’ve never seen it, I can’t recommend the series enough. I like the whole series, but there’s no question it does down hill in season two. Watch the complete first season and the first nine episodes of season two (through “Arbitrary Law”).

If there internet is good at anything, it’s providing a venue for niche stuff like this: photos of the locations where Twin Peaks was shot, 20 years later.

Twin Peaks and My So-Called Life

There’s a new boxed set of Twin Peaks out on DVD. I already have both seasons, but this is the one to get if you don’t.

The Washington Post has a review of the set. It includes the original pilot for the first time in American release, which is important as the European version contains spoilers in the form of extra footage incorporated from later episodes in a bizarre attempt to make the pilot a self-contained movie. Here’s the best resource about the series I’ve found online, which helps explain some of the mythology in the series. Many people consider season two to be far inferior to earlier episodes. Either you’ve built up a love of the characters and you’ll enjoy it, or you can stop watching after episode 16. Personally I love it all the way through. Also, the movie, Fire Walk with Me, should only be watched once after you’ve finished the whole series.

Speaking of new releases of DVDs I already own, there’s a new collection of My So-Called Life out which includes a book with essays about the series by series creator Winnie Holzman as well as Joss Whedon, Janeane Garofalo, and Michele Byers. Here’s IGN’s review of the DVD.

Twin Peaks

Out on DVD for the first time ever, and coming almost six years after the release of the first season, is Twin Peaks Season Two. Previously the only way you could watch it was on a VHS set that had five hours on each tape.

I absolutely love this show. It did the “mystery with a supernatural slant” thing 14 years before Lost came around (and also the “OMG the plot is dragging do they know where they’re going with this?” thing). Katherine got this for me for my birthday, but I managed to ruin the surprise by almost ordering it last month.

We’re off to New York for a few days. I was considering picking up Pokémon Pearl for the ride up, but I think I’ll wait on it until later in the summer.
